Work at Home Ideas: Freelance Writer

Do you love to write?  Are you creative and have a way with words?  There are many resources out there for you to turn this talent into a career. Here are the basics to get you started:

Qualifications:  A degree in English and/or Journalism is often preferred, although not always necessary.  Good communication and writing skills are a must, along with a superior command of grammar and language.

Start-up Costs:  A Computer with desktop publishing software (Quark is the industry standard) can run anywhere from $1000-$2000.

Marketing:  Networking is a good way of finding work.  Professional organizations can provide great leads, as well as valuable information on the industry.  You may want to start by querying such places with samples of your writing.  Resource books like Writer's Market  also offer a wealth of information on which publishers will accept freelance work.  Online Job sites are quickly becoming a great way to search for freelancing opportunities, or to post your resume.

Tips: Try getting your work published in small journals and publications to build up your resume.
