Name: Sara
Age: 43
Home: California, but have been living in Southern Italy for the
past 13 years.
Family's Names and Ages:
Francesco 45
Daniele 8
Gabriele 5
Occupation:
English language teacher
If I had a day to myself...:
Put on English-language videos and iron that enormous pile of ironing
that never seems to get done. Or better yet, lie down on the sofa and
read novels and eat chocolate chip cookies!!!
Money Saving Tips:
We don't have coupons here like in the States, but I buy all the stuff
that's on sale each week at my local supermarket. I also wash and reuse
my ziplock bags and aluminum foil!
Bargain Hunting Strategies:
Living in Italy means I don't shop at the same stores that you have in
the States, but I wait for the end-of-season sales and buy all my boys
clothes for the following year.
Products we can't live without:
I am not faithful to any particular brand or product. I always buy
whatever is cheapest. My kids would probably say they couldn't live
without hot dogs, fish sticks and ketchup!
In the Kitchen:
Here's a cake recipe that's super simple:
Yoghurt Cake
1 small container plain whole yoghurt (aprox. 4.5 ounce size)
flour
sugar
3 eggs
oil (I use olive oil, but any type will probably do)
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. vanilla
zest of one lemon
(my measurements are kind of aproximated because we have the metric
system over here, but I am pretty sure it will work this way)
Empty yoghurt into large mixing bowl. Use yoghurt container to measure
other ingredients. Three containers of flour, two containers of sugar
and 2/3 container of oil. Mix with all the other ingredients until
blended. Pour into a greased and floured cake pan and bake at 365°F for
30 minutes or until center is cooked. Let cool.
Here in Italy we eat this cake for breakfast with milk and coffee (no
coffee for the kids, of course). In the States you would probably want
to frost the cake and eat it as a dessert. I thought cake for breakfast
was pretty strange when I first got here, but now I'm used to it. When
in Rome, do as the Romans do . . .
Organization:
I try to clean room by room. If I get sidetracked into another room, I
lose my concentration and end up getting very little done. I also try
to emphasize order over true cleanliness, if only because at least
things look clean!
