How to Save Hundreds of Dollars Per Year on Baby Gifts By Dana Williams  Think for a minute. How many baby showers have you attended in the past year? Now think about how much money you've spent in the last year on baby shower gifts. One, two, may three hundred? The truth is, there are many gifts you can create with very little time and effort.

Theme Ideas:

RUBBER DUCKY

Those fun, yellow rubber duckies make a great, inexpensive shower theme!

  • Send a small rubber ducky to each guest, and invite them to include it with their gift.
  • Put a rubber ducky in the punch bowl

HOLIDAY BABY SHOWER

A great way to present the special couple with fun, unique gifts!  This is especially nice for the couple who already has plenty of baby supplies, or for a second baby shower.

When inviting each guest, assign them to a holiday (Christmas, Easter, etc.).  Suggest that their gift somehow represent their assigned holiday.  Remind them how old the baby will be at their holiday.  Gifts can include:  Stuffed bunnies for Easter, a Baby's First Christmas Ornament, A red white and blue outfit for the Fourth of July, etc.

At the shower, have guests share their holiday traditions and stories.

CHILD'S LIBRARY PARTY

A great shower idea for a second child, or when you are having the shower before knowing the sex of the baby.

Invite each guest to bring a children's book or series of books that meant a lot to them in their
own childhood or while raising their children.  It provides the new mother with a ready-made
library.

TIME OF DAY SHOWER

Assign your guests to one of these times in baby's day:
    Bath Time
    Diaper Time
    Feeding Time
    Play Time
    Bed Time

Ask them to bring a gift appropriate to that time of day.  This will provide mom with a wide variety of useful gifts.  Especially nice for the first time mother, who needs everything.

Game Ideas:

BABY BINGO

When guests first arrive, give them a preprinted "bingo" card with blank boxes. (You can make the card by using a computer to put boxes on a sheet of paper. Don't forget to include a free space). Have them fill in the boxes with that they think the mother-to-be will be receiving as shower gifts.  As she opens each gift, have the guests cross out the gift if they have it listed on their sheet. The first one with "Baby Bingo" wins.

BABY FOOD TASTE TEST

Buy six or more baby foods. Put a little of each on a disposable plate with a number written beside it.  Give each guest a sheet of paper, and have them write their guess as to what food is which number.  It is fun to watch people's faces as they try foods like squash and spinach.

BABY LOTTO

Beginning with two weeks before, and going one week after the mother's due date, sell a "baby lotto" ticket for the date on which the guests think mom will deliver.  Offer two spaces each day, one for A.M. and one for P.M.  The guest that buys the winning space wins the lotto jackpot!

This is fun for mom to have during those days when she is anticipating giving birth at any moment.  She can think to herself, "If I deliver today, so-and-so would win."

BABY PICTURE GAME

This game works great if your guests are friends rather than relatives.  Have all the guests send a  baby picture of themself with their RSVP.  Make a photocopied page of all the photos you receive, and label each one with a number. At the party, give your guests the photocopied page, and have them guess who is who.

LOOK FOR THE NUK

Hide one or two nuks in the room.  Make sure that the nuk is hidden in plain view, yet still difficult enough to take a few minutes to find.  The person who finds the nuk wins.

GIFT WRAP IDEAS

  • Wrap your gift with a decorative receiving blanket, and close with a diaper pin.

  • Instead of a ribbon around the present, use two pacifier holders.

  • Instead of a bow, use a teething ring, key ring, pacifier or a rattle.
